Chacun porte le poids de ses actes. Déodat du Puy-Montbrun ne prétend pas faire œuvre d’historien. Il pose des interrogations. Jusqu’à présent il avait conservé le silence sur la guerre livrée en Algérie. La manière dont s’écrit aujourd’hui l’Histoire l’a décidé à parler. Héritier d’une grande maison féodale du Languedoc, protestant parmi des catholiques, orphelin pour cause de Première Guerre mondiale, engagé à vingt ans à peine dans le second conflit mondial, Déodat du Puy-Montbrun a participé à tous les combats de l’armée française, de la Résistance à l’Algérie, en passant par l’Indochine et les services spéciaux. Bien que Français libre, distingué par vingt-sept titres de guerre dont dix-neuf citations, il a payé très cher, à l’aube de la Ve République, son sens de l’honneur militaire. Décidé à rompre avec les simplifications et les amalgames contemporains, Déodat du Puy-Montbrun, six fois blessé, tient au respect du vrai. Surtout lorsque l’on aborde des sujets aussi délicats que la torture. Il témoigne aujourd’hui pour une génération qui n’a pas à rougir de la manière dont elle a servi son pays. La partie consacrée à l’Algérie a été revue par l’historien Jean-Paul Pace.
L’art de la guerre: de Machiavel à Clausewitz

L’histoire de l’art de la guerre du 16e au 19e siècle, disparu avec la révolution industrielle. Ce volume analyse les façons de raisonner la guerre durant cette période en Europe. Pour les maîtres de la guerre, la pratique ne suffisait pas, il fallait d’abord étudier les principes et l’organisation militaires, et avoir une certaine éthique de la guerre. Les thèmes abordés sont l’histoire de la fortification, la tactique, la stratégie des armées européennes et leur capitaine: Maurice de Nassau, Turenne, Eugène de Savoie, Frédéric II, Napoléon.
